Does management of plant diversity enhance arthropod-mediated ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes?

The Earth is experiencing a biodiversity crisis. While the alarming rate of arthropod species extinction has been recognized for some time, these species were relatively inconsequential to the functioning of agroecosystems. Recent findings demonstrate a dramatic decline in the abundance of flying insects, leading entomologists to realize the potential crisis for the functioning of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. The rapid decline in insect biomass is the result of a multitude of interacting factors, or ‘death by a thousand cuts’, with agricultural intensification underlined as a key factor. Our goal is to identify if and which plant diversity practices increase arthropod biodiversity on farms. We conducted a literature review screening both research and review articles over the last 50 years reporting on the effects of plant diversity practices on arthropod biodiversity and related ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. We screened 2,500 papers discussing plant diversity practices affecting six ecosystem services provided by arthropods: biocontrol, pollination, decomposition, habitat modification, bioturbation, and relevant ecosystem disservices. In addition, we gathered data regarding plant diversity practices and their economic, structural and functional value on arthropod biodiversity. From this extensive literature review, we hope to determine effective ways in which growers can enhance plant diversity on farms, leading to greater arthropod abundance, diversity, and beneficial ecosystem services.
