The darkling beetle tribe Stenochiini Kirby, 1837 contains over 50 genera worldwide, the most diverse being the genus Strongylium Kirby, 1819, which includes nearly 1000 described species. Approximately 20 genera and 550 species of Stenochiini have been described from the Neotropics, the great majority of which were established more than 100 years ago. The poorly-defined genus and species concepts have not been tested using suites of characters that have recently been used to classify tenebrionids; this has greatly impeded our ability to accurately identify material in collections and plan taxonomic studies on the diverse fauna. In the first step towards unlocking future research on Neotropical representatives of this tribe, we review the fauna treated in Biologia Centrali-Americana by George Champion (1887-1896).
