Washington State Department of Agriculture Yakima, Washington
In 2021, a group of native bee (Anthophila) enthusiasts from Washington state approached the Washington State Department of Agriculture Pollinator Health Coordinator and asked if they could have a state sponsored Washington Bee Atlas, similar to the Oregon Bee Atlas. The answer was yes. The project was passed by the state legislature in 2022. And the taxonomist for the project was hired in February of this year. Here we present the first year growing pains and gains of a new statewide bee atlas, how different funding sources affect different bee atlases, using the Oregon Bee Atlas as a template, working across agencies, and developing specimen and data work flows.
