Farmers are continuing in their efforts to increase food production on the available arable land to feed an expanding global population. Insect pests compete for the food and feed crops, and thus require measures to minimize their impact. Integrated pest management (IPM) involves multiple approaches to managing insect pests, including the use of insect control agents when appropriate. The types of insect control agents have evolved over the past seven decades, while the goal of continuously improving pest insect control and reducing mammalian toxicity and environmental impact has remained constant. This presentation will address the agrochemical industry’s past and current efforts to discover, build and develop insect control agents that are in keeping with a number of United Nations sustainability goals.
