Towards healthier bees: Applications of a honey bee pangenome in the analysis of hygienic breeding lines

A primary factor affecting honey bee health is the effect of pests and pathogens. To abate this effect, decades-long breeding programs have focused on selecting for specific hygienic behaviors as a sustainable, treatment independent strategy. These programs have provided significant gains in establishing hygienic traits in target populations, but much is still unknown of their genetic underpinnings. Here outline key advances in our understanding of these traits. Principally, we describe the development of a honey bee pangenome using representatives from hygienic honey bee populations. We further apply this tool to provide a comprehensive analysis of the genetic diversity among these populations with a focus on populations selected for hygienic behavior against the parasitic mite
Varroa destructor

. This work serves as first steps towards a deeper understanding of the genetics mediating pest and pathogen resistance. Findings can further aid in ensuing genetic work by providing genomic regions of interest and putative targets for marker-assisted or genomic selection
