Monitoring and management of western flower thrips in California lettuce

In reference to Western Flower Thrips (WFT; Frankliniella occidentalis), Dr. Stanley Bailey noted in 1938 that “there is much to be learned concerning the seasonal migrations and local host succession of the thrips.” Nearly a century later, Dr. Bailey’s observation still rings true. Persistent questions about the movement, sources, and vector statuses of WFT populations make it challenging to develop regional management strategies for WFT and the plant diseases they vector. To tackle some of these long-lasting knowledge gaps, we are working on various monitoring (regional trapping network, transplant nursery and non-crop sampling, adult emergence, and improving trap design) and management projects to better understand movement, sources, and vector statuses of WFT populations as they relate to lettuce production in the Salinas Valley of California.
