Pyrophorini is a tribe of charismatic click beetles known for their bioluminescence. In the West Indies, these are commonly called Cucuyos and have had a long history in the folklore of indigenous people and later settlers. However, there is a history of confusion about species identification in the region. Most of this confusion was settled by a revision of the tribe by Dr. Cleide Costa. However, species descriptions in the region after the revision required updates to keys to species. Pyrophorini specimens from the West Indies were re-examined and faunal composition of islands was determined. This presentation also discusses some of the complexities discovered when the surface of a group is scratched when attempting to create what should be a “simple” checklist or review.
