Disentangling fall armyworm genetic structure in North America and its implications for management

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly mobile agricultural pest endemic to the Western Hemisphere. In this study we use a whole genome sequencing approach to characterize the population structure of this pest across North America. Our study will answer two primary questions; 1) to what extent are geographic populations genetically distinct, 2) what is the functional significance of genomic differentiation between populations? Our goal is to apply our knowledge of fall armyworm population structure to develop improved migratory models and more targeted pest management strategies for this pest species in its native range.
