Navel orangeworm Amyelois transitella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) olfactometer responses to a sex pheromone under rearing conditions for SIT applications

Navel orangeworm (NOW) is the primary insect pest of tree nuts in California. Multiple strategies are in place to manage this insect in the field and prevent major losses. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a promising approach under exploration for providing additional control of NOW. Currently, the separation of sexes is not in place under mass-rearing conditions for the release of sterile insects. Here, we aim to assess the responses of NOW towards a sex pheromone and study mating disruption pheromones under the rearing conditions of this insect. We implemented a Y-tube experiment and recorded male and female choices to determine the orientation to sex pheromone. To study mating behavior, we counted mating events in chambers connected to an olfactometer in the presence and absence of a sex pheromone and we recorded spermatophore transfer.
