Sex-specific biology of the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis)

Ticks are a major health threat to humans and other animals. There are half a million cases of Lyme disease annually in the United States, a disease caused by the bite of an infected black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis). This tick species has thirteen pairs of autosomes and a male heterogametic XY system (XY males and XX females). However, the currently available I. scapularis genome is from a female individual and the X chromosome has not yet been identified, so the sequence differences between males and females are currently unknown. In this study we use whole-genome resequencing and RADseq to identify sex-specific sequences for I. scapularis.
