Evaluation of a novel trap for ticks (Acarina) in widely separated geographic locations

We conducted field experiments with four iterations of a novel tick trap in which ticks climb up a perimeter ramp and become stuck on a downward-facing sticky surface. Attraction is induced by dry ice in a Styrofoam container on top of the trap. Experiments were conducted in southern California, southeast Texas, north-central Oklahoma, and central Wisconsin. Differences were found in numbers of ticks captured in relation to trap design, forested and grassland sites and sampling by trapping or dragging. The traps captured multiple species, with variation among locations. Attempts to bait traps with a biotic CO2 lure comprised of a carbohydrate substrate, a humectant and yeast were thwarted by raccoons. We discuss the suitability of the trap for future tick surveillance.
