An extended investigation of the susceptibility of Spodoptera frugiperda in the United States southern region to seven common chemical insecticides

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a destructive polyphagous pest prevalent in most parts of the world. Recently, its infestations have increased in some areas of the southern U.S., which may be linked to the development of resistance to chemical insecticides. In this study, 16 field FAW populations were collected from seven southern U.S. states. Diet over-lay bioassays were performed to determine the susceptibility of the field-collected populations to seven common chemical insecticides (Diamond, Intrepid, Steward, Warrior-II, Vantacor, Dimilin and Orthene). Most of the field populations showed some resistance to five of the seven insecticides; of these, several populations had evolved high levels ( >100-fold) of resistance to Orthene, Vantacor, and Warrior. There was no cross-resistance between Orthene and each of the other six insecticides, while multiple and/or cross-resistance may exist among Intrepid, Dimilin, Vantacor, and Warrior II. The data generated from this study will be useful in assisting insecticide selection for FAW management.
