The corn earworm, Helicoverpa. zea, is one of the most destructive agricultural pests in North America. It is well-known that colony maintenance of H. zea in laboratory conditions is a great challenge due to colony collapse. This study evaluated the adult calling, mating, and reproduction of lab-adapted and recently field-collected H. zea populations in absence and presence of different host plant tissues. The results showed that, in absence of host plant tissue, the lab-adapted population showed more calling and mated at higher frequency, with equal or greater fecundity and egg hatching rates, relative to field-collected populations. However, the presence of host plant tissues significantly elevated adult calling, mating, and reproduction of the field populations. The results suggest that presence of host plant tissues should improve laboratory rearing and colony maintenance of H. zea.
