Non-target and sublethal effects of pesticides commonly used in tree fruit orchards on earwigs

The European earwig Forficula auricularia L. (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) is an important natural enemy of key pests in pome fruit, such as the codling moth, pear psylla, woolly apple aphid, and spider mites. As a univoltine organism (i.e., one generation per year), that spends daytime in refuge spaces, earwigs are not under strong selective pressure for pesticide resistance, thus being considered very susceptible to them. As earwigs are considered to be augmented and conserved in pome fruit orchards, we need to tailor earwig-specific pesticide recommendations to growers in order to promote their establishment in the field. To do this, we performed non-target and sublethal effects bioassays with residuals of commonly used pesticides on earwigs. For non-target bioassays, we used a Potter Spray Tower to apply the maximum field rate of pesticides in glass petri dishes, let them dry, subsequently adding five female adult earwigs per petri dish and evaluated their mortality at 24 and 48h. Individuals surviving the non-target bioassay were individualized in clean glass petri dishes the following day and observed for 30 minutes using the EthoVision software to evaluate possible sublethal effects on their movement patterns. Finally, we added 10 potato aphids to each petri dish, and the number of aphids eaten were recorded every 30 minutes until the majority of aphids have been eaten. Results of these experiments will be discussed.
