(1st Place) Adult longevity of soybean gall midge

The soybean gall midge, Resseliella maxima Gagné, is a novel soybean pest in the Midwest
United States. It was identified as a new species in 2019, and as of 2022 it has been detected in
155 counties across 5 states. Resseliella maxima infests soybean stems, causing injury which
leads to lodging and death of plants, along with substantial yield loss. Impacts are heaviest at
field edges, where losses of up to 92% have been estimated in the first 30 meters of impacted
fields. Due to soybeans' economic importance and the severe impacts R. maxima can cause,
information on the basic biology and potential management of R. maxima are important to the
industry. However, since it is a novel pest, there are considerable knowledge gaps surrounding
much of its biology. In order to better understand R. maxima biology and its risk to soybean in
the region, we present data on adult longevity at various temperature regimes and nutritional
treatments.
