DoD-funded Research to Develop Products for Vector Surveillance, Control and Bite Prevention

Novel evaluation of control and prevention strategies for ticks and tick-borne diseases

Our team of collaborators addressed several aspects of tick bite prevention and tick-borne disease control as an important focus of public and military health. Results of our program demonstrated that a novel inactivated reservoir targeted vaccine for the white footed mouse can reduce B. burgdorferi infections in the host as well as the number of infected tick larvae parasitizing those mice. In addition, our team demonstrated that high density permethrin treated 4-poster devices in an island environment (Manresa Island, CT) reduced adult host seeking ticks and nymphs by 93 and 92% and led to a 47% reduction in Ehrichia spp. presence in those ticks. Other results include the demonstration of carvacrol, eugenol, nerolidol, and thymol to repel H. longicornis and A. americanum host seeking ticks. In addition, we utilized the larval packet test to establish baseline susceptibility for I. scapularis to permethrin to monitor resistance under sustained control pressure, such as long term 4-poster devices.
