DoD-funded Research to Develop Products for Vector Surveillance, Control and Bite Prevention

New applications of industrial minerals for vector control and the unexpected

The use of the minerals produced by diatoms (diatomaceous earth, DE) for insect control has been known for many decades, but not so much for the control of medically important acarines. What is not commonly known is that all DE is not the same and some is not insecticidal. Also, until recently, finding and developing a better alternative to DE for the control of arthropods had not occurred. A status report will be made on our work with volcanic glass (Imergard), a DE alternative, and with an especially active form of DE (Celite) for mosquito, filth fly and sand fly control; and the associated regulatory efforts. A surprisingly new discovery is the efficacy of these industrial minerals against ticks and their alternative uses (early stage work). It is also interesting, “how one thing leads to another” and “how having fun” can lead to the unexpected. This project has certainly accomplished that with significance.
