Genomics of Invasion

Giant centromeric repeats in the giant hornets

The Northern Giant Hornet, Vespa mandarinia, is a recent invasive to North America, which presents a predatory threat to our cultivated and native pollinator bees. Understanding the underlying genomic features that contribute to an increased body size and the resilience of invasive species are important facets to successfully managing the threat to pollinators. Both the invasive Northern Giant Hornet and the previously introduced European Hornet, Vespa crabro, are large hornets that exhibit large centromeric repeats with unique structures and origins from one another. The genomes of these introduced populations offer a comparison to other genomic resources across the genus Vespa to examine the centromeric expansion in these species.
