Multi-kingdom interactions on the phytochemical landscape

For insect herbivores, plant quality varies markedly at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Variation in plant quality is important because it drives many of the interactions between insect herbivores and their predators, parasites, competitors, and mutualists.Consequently, the “phytochemical landscape” provides the nexus upon which multi-kingdom interactions are expressed. Here, we use examples from milkweed (Asclepias) species to describe multi-kingdom interactions among soil fungi, plants, insects (monarch butterflies, aphids, parasitoids), and protozoan parasites. We illustrate how rates of parasitism, disease virulence, and resistance to disease cannot be fully understood without reference to multi-kingdom interactions originating with soil fungi. We suggest that predicting changes in insect abundance and community composition under global environmental change will require a multi-kingdom approach, grounded on the phytochemical landscape.
