Phytoseiids are among the most successful biological control agents for several arthropod pests in protected horticultural crops. Advances in mass production and application have now elevated their status as prospective BCAs in several outdoor agricultural crops, including tree and small fruits, nuts, and even hops. Drawing on experiences in strawberries, we review factors contributing to their success and highlight existing barriers to their implementation in outdoor agriculture. We review ongoing trials to evaluate commercially-produced predatory mites in new cropping systems.
