GreenLight Biosciences is developing novel, double stranded RNA (dsRNA) based bio-insecticides for the selective control of several pests including Colorado potato beetle (CPB) (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) and Varroa mite (Varroa destructor). CPB is one of the most devastating pests of potatoes and is highly prone to developing resistance to control measures. New tools are required to successfully manage this pest. Calantha (active ingredient ledprona) is expected to be the first sprayable dsRNA active registered in the United States and is in the final stages of the regulatory process with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Regulatory submissions are in progress in other potato growing regions of the world. Calantha provides effective control of CPB and will offer growers a novel mode of action. The current status and positioning of Calantha will be highlighted. Varroa mite is considered by most to be the largest contributor to colony collapse in managed honeybee colonies. Vadescana has been developed for control of varroa mites on honeybees and is currently under concurrent review by the US EPA and California DPR. Vadescana is providing extended control of varroa mite and will deliver a much-needed new mode of action. Recent testing results and regulatory status will be highlighted.
