Current Research of Insect Repellents On-Demand Presentations

Novel synthetic and essential oil spatial repellents targeting mosquitoes in simulated military scenarios in a warm temperate environment

Spatial repellents targeting biting arthropods are an emerging technology showing great promise for improving integrated vector management to protect military personnel in the field. Significant challenges with spatial repellent active ingredients such as transfluthrin include toxic effects upon prolonged exposure which could lead to evolution of resistance, varying repellent efficacy depending on whether used in the open air or in partially enclosed areas, and heterogenous effects across species which could only partially protect an individual from the community of biting arthropods in an area. In this presentation we discuss results from a series of experiments we conducted in a warm-humid subtropical habitat in north central Florida to investigate the efficacy of transfluthrin, two experimental synthetic spatial repellents, and experimental essential oils showing repellent properties targeting natural populations of vector and nuisance mosquitoes.
