Assistant Professor and Entomology Extension Specialist New Mexico State University Las Cruces, New Mexico
Extension means to provide research-based programs and resources for state residents. However, it arguably goes beyond that. For programs and research to be impactful, special attention needs to be given to the people involved in such programs. These people are those in need, but also the other Extension and research personnel. Collaborating with other experts creates more robust programs – it is about the people in the program, not just the program itself. Without people and well-connected communities, extension would not function. Sharing science-based solutions and innovations with all sorts of audiences can be difficult, however, paying attention to the needs and wants of people goes a long way. Learning how to effectively engage takes effort and time, but it is an act of giving that is genuinely appreciated and goes a long way. From educating and inspiring a 1st grader to an Advanced Master Gardener, every bit of service in extension makes a difference. This talk will showcase examples of meaningful effort and collaboration in extension.
