Using Behavior as a Central Organizing Concept in Stored Products: Towards Behaviorally-based IPM

Behavior is a central aspect in assessing integrated pest management tactics. However, it is often overlooked, even in extensive testing protocols. Here, we show how the behavioral response of stored product insects may have a central bearing on the efficacy of new and existing integrated pest tactics at food facilities. We present the results of our work with specifically with long-lasting insecticide netting, fumigation, and residual insecticides in KS and AR. This was evaluated in some cases with both phosphine-susceptible and -resistant populations of insects. We find that even for tactics that are not a physical barrier, they may act as a chemical barrier, preventing dispersal, colonization, and reproduction in commodities under field conditions. Assessing behavioral response in a variety of ways (laboratory, semi-field, and field) was key to determining the efficacy of these tactics and their integration with each other. Overall, understanding the behavior of the system allows us to better deploy and optimize IPM tactics at food facilities with an improved understanding of their efficacy.
