Louis Armstrong Park in New Orleans, Louisiana is the location of the world's longest running termite research site. This 13-hectare park, adjacent to the historic French Quarter, was established as a termite research site spearheaded by Dr. Nan-Yao Su from 1998 until 2014. Using mark-release-recapture and microsatellite genotyping, subterranean termite colonies and their foraging territories within the park could be mapped. Ultimately, this allowed researchers to have a model for termite colonies in undisturbed areas, areas disturbed by construction, baited areas over time, as well as reinvading colonies once baiting ceases. The data gathered from numerous projects in Louis Armstrong Park has benefitted the entire termite control industry, as it has allowed for a greater understanding of termite control best practices with baiting technology.
