SD40: Assessing trap efficacy for capturing Xylosandrus germanus, a New York apple pest

Since its detection in 2013, Xylosandrus germanus has become an economically destructive apple pest in New York. Apple orchards are most vulnerable to X. germanus attacks when in close proximity to wooded areas that harbor overwintering adults. There are two flight periods in upstate New York, one occurs in early to mid-May and the next, in early to mid-July, depending on weather conditions. Understanding X. germanus’ emergence and flight activity is essential to develop proper control and preventative measures. In this study, we deployed four different insect traps (1. black panel trap, 2. water bottle plate traps, 3. Trece TR 427, and 4. Trece TR211 clear sticky) with Trece TRE 1785 ethanol lures at the orchards edge along wooded areas and assessed their efficacy for X. germanus capture during X. germanus flight season. These results will allow agricultural professionals to optimize pest scouting and trapping methods alongside increases in X. germanus population density to assess timing for control Measures.
