D3384: News flash: New insecticides added to the CONUS manual for evaluating insecticide resistance in mosquitoes using the CDC bottle bioassay kit”

Insecticide resistance is a major issue in the United States (U.S.), especially in the realm of mosquito control. Organophosphates and pyrethroids are the only two classes of insecticides available for adult mosquito control. Insecticide resistance monitoring by agencies conducting mosquito control is essential so informed control choices can be made.

In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published the current “CONUS Manual for Evaluating Insecticide Resistance in Mosquitoes Using the CDC Bottle Bioassay Kit” to provide guidance for U.S. vector control and public health professionals so resistance could be monitored in a standardized manner. The manual currently provides diagnostic doses and times for 10 insecticides used in adult mosquito control for five common mosquito vector species in the United States.

Additional insecticides from these two classes are increasingly used by pest management professionals and homeowners to treat individual properties. Thus, necessitating the need for diagnostic doses and times to be evaluated for common mosquito species so the information can be added to the CDC manual.
