The Gulf Fritillary (Dione vanillae) is an easily recognizable butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Based on anecdotal accounts, it was rare in the Clemson area ca. 1960s–1970s and at the time only common in the coastal regions of South Carolina and the southern United States. Historic specimens in the Clemson University Arthropod Collection were databased and date and location of collection was mapped. Several approaches were taken to test if the Gulf Fritillary has been expanding its range further into South Carolina and the Clemson area, if it is migrating faster than it previously had, or if the anecdotal accounts are in error.
