D3190: Distribution and habitat use of critically imperiled bumble bees in the mountains of Central Appalachia

Pollinators play an important role in influencing the health and productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. However, many pollinator species have undergone range contractions and declines in abundance. Further research is needed to better understand distributions and habitat use while guiding conservation efforts. We conducted netting surveys across Central Appalachia during the summer of 2022 to better understand bumble bee communities in a region of high conservation value. Netting consisted of 10-minute surveys of the greater pollinator community, with an emphasis on bumble bees (Bombus spp.). We performed approximately 300 individual surveys spanning approximately 100 unique sites. In total, 13 species of Bombus were observed, including two critically imperiled species, B. affinis and B. terricola. Using this data, we assessed the distribution and habitat use of (Bombus spp.) throughout the region. These findings will help inform conservation managers about the current range, habitat preferences, and abundance of imperiled bumble bee species throughout the central Appalachians.
