Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a migratory noctuid pest of row crops and vegetables. Although originally from the Americas, it now has a worldwide distribution in the tropics and subtropics. In the U.S., it overwinters in southern Texas and Florida and invades as far north as southern Canada by the end of the field season. Pheromone trapping to obtain moths and genetic analysis of specimens has been accomplished for over a decade to provide evidence for two migratory pathways that are repeated on an annual basis with minor year-to-year adjustments.
