Since 2019, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Entomology (UNL) has hosted a beneficial insects-focused Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) program. This NIFA-funded experience, has provided real-world research and extension skill development for 27 undergraduates during the summer months by partnering them with research labs in the UNL Entomology. Students mentees work with faculty to design a small research project to conduct during their stay and are mentored by both faculty and graduate students. Program participates also participate in extension program delivery activities. Mentees also participate in university-wide professional development activities with other REU students, including workshops aimed at helping them become a successful graduate student (e.g. conflict management, scientific authorship, science communication, and graduate school application prep). In the first three years of the program, 100% of the students believe that they increased in their skills in presenting to others, ability to conduct research, confidence as a researcher, and potential as a scholar. To date, 7 program mentees now attend graduate school in the agricultural sciences, including 4 in entomology. This poster details the Beneficial Insects REEU, including pre and post program data gathered from undergraduate participants and mentors.
