The tribe Dacini is comprised of 1,016 described species. Their native distribution covers the Old World tropics, with the majority of the species in the genera Bactrocera (531 species), Zeugodacus (198 species), Monacrostichus (2 species), and Dacimita (1 species) restricted to Asia, and 193 of the 285 species of Dacus native to Africa. Almost 10% (84 species) are considered pests of cultivated or edible fruits, with fruit pests in the genera Bactrocera (55 species) and Monacrostichus (1 species), and cucurbit fruit or flower pests in the genera Dacus (11 species) and Zeugodacus (17 species). Many of these have become highly invasive and destructive pests, introduced to numerous parts of the world. An overview of these pests, their distribution, historical invasions, and traditional diagnostic tools to help in their identification is presented. A user-friendly illustrated dichotomous key to the pest species based on morphological characters is in progress, expected to be published in 2024.
